The Government, as part of its drive to open up data held by local authorities, has asked all local councils to list invoices over £500 from January on their websites. It says making councils publish the data will boost accountability and make local authorities question its spending. The council will now be regularly publishing each quarter’s spending online.
Councillor Ken Williamson, cabinet member for resources, said: “Anyone who is spending the public’s money should be able to account for it – so we are pleased to be able to make this information available online. People have always had the right to come in to the Civic Centre and inspect our accounts but this will make it easier for them to see all the invoices we pay out which are more than £500.”
