Council wants to limit new housing in Stone

Only 500 new houses should be built in Stone in the next two decades after significant housing growth in the town in recent years – that’s the view of Stafford Borough Council in a consultation on development across the borough.

The council has asked people to suggest where new homes should go and has also invited views on land it has identified for potential new business development up to 2031. The Local Choices consultation runs until 28th January.

  • The council says of housing in Stone: “We suggest that land should only be allocated for limited new housing in Stone of approximately 500 new homes, and for this to be built after 2021.”
  • Regarding employment land in Stone, the council’s consultation document states: “In common with other built-up areas, Stone town has been losing employment land to housing.”

It states that 34 hectares of land already has planning permission for employment use at the former Meaford Power Station site. It asks whether Stone Business Park should also be extended by a further 10 hectares.
