On Tuesday 09/04/2013 I attended The Stone town council meeting. One of the agenda items was Westbridge Park. After the 4700 signatures against a supermarket on the park and the 1100+ signatures on the borough council consultation we were told in the press by Borough Council leader Mike Heenan that the supermarket plan had been put, ‘on ice’. I was surprised then to hear the Chairman Cllr Phil Jones talking about getting the Borough council to clarify the Supermarket plan. His rationale for this seemed to be that the 1200 signatories who had said NO to a supermarket on the SBC consultation process did not really understand what they were doing that they did not understand the benefits of a supermarket.
The Meeting Chairman Cllr Phil Jones along with the Town Tory group voted to send the Westbridge Park issue back to the Borough Council for clarification so that the process of building a supermarket can continue. The issue came up for a vote and ALL the tory councillors except one (Cllr G Collier) voted for it to back to the Borough council. No other councillors voted for that motion. So the people of Stone who thought their vote against a supermarket would be respected by the Town council they elected, will soon find out that the Tory group on the Town council just sent the plans back to the Borough council for clarification. All but one of the Tory councillors voted for the SUPERMARKET plan to be clarified by the borough council for future action. Looks like they want a supermarket whether Stone people want one or not. Is this democracy in action in Tory controlled Stone?
