Olympic and world champs heading for Stone

Crowds wait for the cyclists on Stafford Street last year

The world’s best cyclists will be zipping through Stone again this year as the prestigious Tour of Britain race passes through the town.

The third, 100-mile stage of the gruelling 2011 race – on Tuesday 13th September – will start at 10.30am from the Italian Gardens at the Trentham Estate.

About 100 professional riders will head through Swynnerton and Eccleshall before arriving in Stone at about 11.10am for a ‘Yodel sprint’ down Stafford Street and on to Sandon and Milwich. The stage ends in Hanley.

Olympic champion and Tour De France rider Geraint Thomas has been confirmed as the leader of Team Sky.

Amateur cyclists can also have a go at part of the route on 25th September as part of the The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride.

The full route begins in Scotland on 11th September and ends in London on 18th September. Lots more information at the Tour of Britain website.
