Stafford Borough Council enforcement officers will soon be patrolling Downs Banks after they were called in to help reduce the number of dog owners failing to clear up after their pets at the National Trust beauty spot.

It’s the first time that council officers will be patrolling the Downs – and anyone seen failing to clear up after their dog will be issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice.

The rangers at Downs Banks posted this on their Facebook page:

“Downs Banks is well known as a brilliant place to walk your dog. Unfortunately too many people are still failing to clean up their dog’s mess. Because of this we have agreed with Stafford Borough Council that they will be able to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to dog owners who don’t clear-up after their pet. Enforcement officers will start visiting the Downs later this year. Meanwhile, thank you to all our responsible dog walkers who do clear-up after their faithful friend. We appreciate it.”

Stafford Borough Council currently has a reward scheme in place for anyone whose information leads to the issuing of a penalty or a prosecution. Please report anyone you see, on the Downs and elsewhere in Stone, who fails to clear up after their pet or who doesn’t dispose of the dog waste bag correctly. Click HERE for more information on how to report.

There are two dog waste bins on the Downs which are emptied twice a week by rangers. Please use them.

I think they need more than 2 bins for such a big area. I walked for ages with a stinky bag of poop in my hand on Sunday before I found a bin. Not very pleasant, so I can understand why some owners don’t bother.
