
Stone Dominoes LFC 2 Sporting Khalsa 2: Stone Dominoes ladies faced tough opposition last Sunday against a senior side from Sporting Khalsa but they were just five minutes from a hard-earned victory.
Both teams had a big squad so it was decided to play three thirds. Stone created many chances from the off with Tammi Bennett and Mollie Prime both getting close to scoring the first goal. The game was competitive on all areas of the pitch, with both teams working hard off the ball and, when in possession, created opportunities to score. The Sporting Khalsa striker spotted the keeper off the line and took a long range shot, luckily Becky Arnold reacted to this and managed to get her head to the ball and off the line. However soon after the visitors netted after a through ball for their striker to run on to. End of the first third 1-0 to Sporting Khalsa.
Stone came out much stronger in the second third, communicating and playing their passing game they are known for. The passing and movement through the midfield was spot on, making the Khalsa players work hard off the ball. A corner was awarded for the Dominoes and up stepped Amy Thompson to take it, floating it into the box for a defender to head an own goal. 1-1. Soon after a long ball came in to the Stone defence, Becky Arnold volleyed the ball back over the Sporting Khalsa defence giving Mollie Prime an excellent chance to take the lead for the home side. Prime – last season’s top scorer – calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
A change of formation for the final third saw much more attacking set up, the Dominoes battled and created a few chances and possession was split quite equally between the teams. Pre-season fitness training looks like it had paid off for both clubs with all the players giving 110% till the final whistle. With just five minutes to go Sporting Khalsa were awarded a corner, an unmarked player managed to get her head to the ball giving the visitors an equaliser. Final score 2-2.
