After a good, reasonably priced day out for your animal-mad youngsters? Then I can highly recommend Peak Wildlife Park, near Leek.
Previously Blackbrook Zoo, the site now has new ownership and they have clearly put in a lot of investment into the revamp.
There are three walk-through areas where you can get up and close to wallabies, three types of lemurs and penguins. Within the wallibies and lemurs you – with the support of the zoo keepers and the animals agreeing! – can handle, stroke and even feed them.
They also have a giant tortoise and various birds and wetland animals. There is also a small shop selling toys, gifts and refreshments, as well as a cafe and small park.
Peak Wildlife Park is still under construction but the vision is clear to see, especially when I spoke to one of the owners, who said that another walk-through area, more animals and a soft play area are on the way. All the staff are extremely knowledgeable on the animals they care for and have various feeds and talks throughout the day.
