Stone Revellers present classic comedy Habeas Corpus, Alan Bennett’s farce with a dark side, early next month.
At first sight Habeas Corpus could appear to be your classic British farce. Indeed all the usual elements of a ‘Carry On’ movie are there – mistaken identity, sexual innuendo and stock characters including your lecherous GP, a desperate housewife and of course the randy local vicar. However, this is a farce with a dark side and running alongside the outrageous farce is a wry commentary which takes this play well beyond the standard.
Set in the early 1970s each character is thrust into the middle of this cynical, irresistible farce of lust, lies and death. Habeas Corpus is a comedy of manners and morality laced with black humour, poking fun at our vanity, pride and carnal desires.
Stone Revellers have worked hard to create what Bennett had in mind and with innovative use of staging, lighting and music this production is sure to be full of laughs and a great night out.
You can see Habeas Corpus at St Michael’s Hall in Lichfield Street between Wednesday 5th and Saturday 8th September. Performances start at 7.30pm and a fully licensed bar is available.
