Fire service works with religious groups

A Stone reverend was among 80 people who attended a multi-faith fire safety awareness event at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s headquarters in the town on Thursday 11th November.

The attendees were from organisations representing a wide range of faith groups including Muslims, Sikhs and Christians.

The death of an elderly lady in a fire at her home on News Year’s Day was the driving force behind the event. Gillian Bromley, who was 65, died at her Stafford home and it was later discovered her only community link was with the church.

Chief Fire Officer/Chief Executive Peter Dartford commented: “Members of faith communities are invariably in regular contact with the more vulnerable and can help us by making referrals to key organisations.  This really has the potential to save lives and to improve the lives of those we serve.”

Reverend Sally Smith from St Michael’s Church in Stone said: “I think the conference has helped to develop a stronger network of people whose aim is to work together for the good of the community.”

Following the success of the event, additional sessions will be organised in the New Year. To express an interest contact Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service on 08451 22 11 55 and ask to speak to the risk reduction officer.
