Firefighters free cow with head stuck in fence

Firefighters were called to a farm in Stone on Sunday morning when a cow got its head stuck in a fence.

Russell Cox called them out after discovering the stuck animal while out walking along Pingle Lane. He took this photo:

Nicki Harris saw a fire engine at the top of Pingle Lane and went to investigate. She said: “I thought it would mean the end of the animal but the firefighters managed to calm the animal down by stroking its neck and getting it free. Amazingly, it wasn’t hurt and it wandered back to its herd.”

Nicki has called for the large gap in the metal fence to be fixed and says that cows have got stuck in it a number of times.

“On my return home,” she said, “I was surprised to see that the damaged railing was still showing a huge gap in it. So while no-one seems to be taking responsibility for fixing it – the fence seems to be the boundary between the farm and the railway – it is only matter of time before the firefighters will be called out again, which seems a real waste of their time.”
