A 60 year old HGV driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following an accident on the M6 this morning.
At around 4:30 this morning a lorry was in collision with a Nissan Micra on the southbound stretch of the M6 between junctions 15 and 14.
The 60-year-old male driver, from the West Midlands, has been taken into custody for questioning.
Of the Nissan Micra occupants four females, and a male, all believed to be adults, died in the car.
Work is ongoing to trace the next of kin and to provide formal identification of the deceased.
A sixth person was taken to hospital and his condition is described as serious, but stable.
As a result of the collision the motorway remained closed for most of the morning with local diversions are in place.
A detailed investigation into the incident has begun.
