The A34 is closed in both directions in Meaford (Sunday 27th January) due to flooding after the heavy rain overnight and melting snow. The fire service’s high volume pumping unit is at the scene, as is Staffordshire Police’s road policing unit. The road was closed early on Sunday morning.
A woman had to be rescued by a prison officer who was on his way to work. She said that there were no warning signs at this stage, that she turned the bend in the road and was in the flood water before she could react. The car floated and the engine cut out.

Why is Meaford continually flooding? Click HERE to see a video that may explain it.
The area was hit by flooding numerous times in November and December. Click the ‘flooding’ tab at the bottom of this post to see all our stories and photographs, or click HERE.
Earlier this month the county council said that divers had been used to clear a culvert that runs underneath the A34 and that it was working with local landowners to find a long-term solution. More on that HERE. A dam was also built to hold back floodwaters in December – but that looks to have breached… This photo from Sunday morning is from Gary Swift via Twitter:
At the other end of town, Crown Meadow is almost entirely under water. Thanks to Amy Easter for this great picture from the footbridge just off Stafford Street:

Here’s another great picture from Gordon Taylor of the A34 at Meaford. I’ll add lots more photos on Sunday night.

can i just make the story clear as there seems to be a lot of stories going on about the incident that happened with my mother inlaw’s car getting stuck in the meaford flood this morning,as you can see in the photo above , There were NO flood signs, this is the reason sue got stuck in the first place! and it was not the emergency services that rescued sue it was a prison officer who was in his way to bristol and sue’s husband leigh, The prison officer’s car is also in the middle of the flood water! If anyone hears who the prison officer is could you please let us know as my mum in law would like to thank him for saving her life!! 🙂

Thanks Leanne. I’m so grateful for your information. Apologies that I got this wrong in the post – I’ve made some changes. Sounds like a horrific experience for your mother-in-law. Sorry again if I caused any upset

Hi Leanne – thanks for clearing this up. I didn’t mean to cause any upset. I got the details of the rescue from the BBC website. Jamie
