Floral tribute brings wartime remembrance to life in Stonefield Park

Floral carpet bed in Stonefield Park displaying the Royal British Legion logo, surrounded by the words “80th anniversary of the end of WWII – 1945–2025”, made entirely from colourful bedding plants, with benches and trees visible in the background.

A colourful new carpet bed at Stonefield Park pays tribute to the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The commemorative display, created and maintained by Stafford Borough Council’s parks team, honours both Victory in Europe (VE Day) and Victory over Japan (VJ Day), marking the end of a conflict that shaped a generation.

Featuring the distinctive red poppy emblem of the Royal British Legion at its centre, the floral design is a visual reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, as well as the civilians who kept the country going on the home front.

Stonefield Park, a hidden treasure in Stone, is well known for its carefully curated flowerbeds. In recent years, its carpet displays have paid tribute to the NHS, the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, and last year’s coronation of King Charles III. The latest design continues this tradition of using public planting to mark moments of national significance.

Both Stonefield Park and Victoria Park in Stafford, which features a matching tribute, hold Green Flag awards, a national recognition for well-managed parks and public spaces.

Councillor Gillian Pardesi, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Stafford Borough Council, said it was an obvious decision to honour the milestone:

“We wanted to provide another opportunity for people to remember those who gave their service and sacrifice, both at home and abroad.

“Both parks are very much loved and attract thousands of residents, families and visitors. They have also been nationally recognised for their quality, and this will be a fitting tribute to encourage people to remember those who sacrificed so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.”

VE Day was marked earlier this month, and VJ Day will be commemorated on 15th August – exactly 80 years since Japan’s surrender brought World War II to an end.

Whether you’re walking the dog, passing through on the school run or taking a quiet moment on one of the park’s benches, the display offers a chance to reflect and remember.
