If you caught episode one (available on ITV X or YouTube to watch again) you will have seen Stephen Stanley from Wrexham. Although Stephen now resides in Wrexham, he spent more than a decade in and around Stone – attending Pirehill, Walton and Alleynes.

Stephen, a political advisor at the City of Wolverhampton Council, appeared in the opening week of ITV1’s new prime-time game show The Floor, hosted by Rob Brydon.

The Floor features 81 contestants competing on a large interactive grid, where players take part in head-to-head quiz duels to win territory. The eventual winner of the series will take home a £50,000 jackpot.

In the first episode, Stephen competed in a timed duel under his specialist category and performed strongly, successfully answering questions on well-known figures including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Julie Andrews.

He won his duel, eliminating his opponent and taking control of additional floor space. After the duel, Stephen chose to return to the floor rather than take a cash floor bonus, opting to remain in the competition and continue playing in later rounds.

The programme airs every Sunday at 7pm on ITV1, and colleagues who missed the episode can catch up on Stephen’s appearance via ITVX.

Stephen said:

“The first week was very nerve-wracking – I didn’t want to be playing so early, and as you could probably see on the TV, I was very nervous!

I’m glad I was able to win the duel and continue on the show, and although I gave off the impression that I was comfortable with my new category, I don’t actually follow cricket that much!

Hopefully I can continue to do well in the coming weeks.”

Explaining how he got onto the show, Stephen told us:

“The process to get on the show consisted of an application form, phone interview, aptitude test, and an in-person interview.

It was very rigorous, and it definitely worked as everyone on the show were incredible and I have met some friends for life!”
