The £1 million highways scheme for Stone’s Walton Roundabout and Eccleshall Road moves on to the next phase with an expected completion date of mid-September.
Staffordshire County Council’s highways teams will be carrying out essential drainage works on Eccleshall Road, from it’s junction with the A34 to Tilling Drive.
The scheme is part of a wider £30 million investment the county council is making into its roads over the next two years. The investment aims to improve major gateways into Staffordshire and is on top of an extra £5 million to fix highways defects across the county.
The council have said that to make sure this phase of the work can be carried out safely, the road will be fully closed from Wednesday 16 to Saturday 19 August. A signed diversion will be in place throughout the works. Access to businesses and properties within the closure will be maintained one way only, from the A34, allowing traffic to travel towards Tilling Drive from the A34 Walton Roundabout.
The one-way road closure and diversion will resume after the above dates until early September as planned. Road resurfacing will also take place later in September.
David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said:
“This is an important scheme for Stone and this latest phase of the works will see the installation of new drainage systems under the road.
“Good roads are important for residents, motorists and of course the economy and it is important to invest in keeping them safe and well maintained. This is why we announced an extra investment of £5 million in pothole repairs, on top of an extra £30 million investment in larger repairs and resurfacing of roads and junctions over the next two years.
“The quickest and safest way to do this phase of the work is to fully close the road for four days. This will give crews the best opportunity to get the work done as efficiently as possible. We’re also doing the work during the school holidays when the roads are quieter, which should help us keep any disruption to a minimum. Once again I would like to thank drivers for their co-operation and patience during the works.”

I live in Beacon Rise Close to where buses come through from the industrial estate. Occasionally when roads are busy I park on the industrial estate side to avoid traffic jams. Often I park on the car park by the bus lane but have to move my car when things are quieter. It is about 100 metres from that car park to where I live.
Last night I left home to move my car to my home. I left about 10pm. I drove to the industrial estate exit on the A34 and found the A34 Closed. I proceeded to Lichfield Road and drove into the town to discover the road next to M&S was closed so had to drive down Newcastle road and turn left by the Tennis Club. I then found the A34 closed and was forced to drive up into Yarnfield and then towards Norton Bridge. At the roundabout I turned towards Stone and eventually got to Tilling Drive and arrived home 40 minutes after starting out. At the moment this situation is ridiculous and makes me very angry!
