People travelling to Stone by car for the late-night shopping event on Thursday 12th December will be able to park for free from 5pm on the borough council’s car parks in the town.
Stafford Borough Council wants to encourage motorists to support local shops which are opening until 8pm on Thursday. Normally motorists are charged until 6pm to leave their cars on the three council-run car parks. But Councillor Frances Beatty said she hoped letting people park for free from five o’clock will keep people in town after work and encourage others to come in early.
The borough council runs the town’s Christchurch Way, Crown Street and Westbridge Park with spaces for a total of more than 250 vehicles. Parking is free every Sunday on all the authority’s car parks. And on the two Saturday afternoon’s before Christmas Day drivers will also not have to pay to park.
Councillor Beatty said: “The shops are open until 8pm on that night and we wanted to try and help the hardworking retailers, who have chosen to extend their hours, by giving an incentive for motorists to stay on after work, for example, or to come into town earlier.
“People could even make an evening of it and enjoy the excellent restaurants and pubs in town before heading home laden with Christmas purchases.”
