After Patrick Farrington, Leader of Stafford Borough Council proposed awarding Olympic gold medallist Joe Clarke the Freedom of the Borough, councillors will meet to vote on the honour.
Joe, who claimed Team GB’s second gold of the Rio Olympics in the K1 men’s slalom on 10 August, was lauded as a “person of distinction” by Farrington. During recent homecoming celebrations in his hometown of Stone, the Stafford and Stone Canoe Club paddler was greeted thousands of people.
Councillor Farrington said: “Joe is fully deserving of the honour of Freedom of the Borough. Not only was the skill, courage and commitment he displayed in achieving Olympic gold an inspiration to so many, during the subsequent interviews across national and international media he has proved to be a great ambassador for our area.”
The meeting will be held on Tuesday 20th September.
