Stone resident Carl Ratcliffe is stepping into the boxing ring this July after eight weeks of intense training, all to support a charity that helped him through some of his toughest times.

Putting up a fight for good
Carl Ratcliffe, who lives with learning disabilities, is pushing himself to the limit to raise money for a cause close to his heart. On Saturday 12th July 2025, Carl will enter the ring as part of an Ultra White Collar Boxing event in Stafford, all in aid of SpecialEffect, a UK charity that helps physically disabled people play video games.
The event follows an eight-week training programme that Carl is fully committed to. It is a huge personal challenge, but also one that means a great deal to him. Gaming has played an important role in Carl’s life, offering comfort and connection when things were at their hardest. Now, he wants to give back to others facing similar struggles.
“Carl has had a tough life, but he’s never let it stop him from trying to help others,” his mum shared. “Gaming helped him through the hardest times, so it means the world to him to support a charity that helps other people find that same kind of joy and escape.”
Raising funds, raising awareness
Carl has set himself a fundraising target of £500, and donations can be made through his JustGiving page. Every pound raised will support the incredible work of SpecialEffect, a charity that creates accessible gaming setups, designs custom equipment, and works directly with individuals to open up the world of video games.
There are also sponsorship opportunities for individuals or local businesses. Anyone donating £50 or more will have the chance to get their logo or name printed on Carl’s vest, along with a shout out on the night of the fight. The person or company who makes the largest donation will also get the honour of choosing Carl’s stage name and his walk-on music.
“We’re hoping local businesses will get behind him,” his mum added. “It’s a great way to show support, and it means so much to Carl to know people believe in him.”
