Just weeks after returning home from intensive care, 71-year-old Stone resident Michael McGowan is preparing to walk 5K with his daughter and young granddaughter to raise funds for the Throat Cancer Foundation.
In late 2024, Michael was given two stark choices – palliative care or a major operation to save his life. Now, after months of recovery, he is taking on a new goal that holds deep meaning for him and his family.

A difficult road
Michael’s experience with cancer has been long and challenging. He previously overcame bladder cancer and then throat cancer, ringing the bell to mark the end of treatment. But his relief was short-lived. His throat cancer returned, more aggressively than before.
When he was admitted to hospital, Michael was in a critical condition and unable to speak. Doctors explained that his only options were end-of-life care or a complex operation involving the removal of his voice box and the creation of a new airway. He was initially too unwell to undergo surgery and needed time to stabilise. After several weeks, and with characteristic determination, Michael chose to go ahead with the operation.
It was not an easy path. He spent four months in intensive care and faced a series of life-threatening complications, including sepsis and pneumonia. Throughout that time, his family remained by his side, often fearing the worst.
Moving forward together
Now back at home and adjusting to life with a stoma, Michael is planning to walk 5K in support of the Throat Cancer Foundation. He will be joined on the walk by his daughter Jodie and his eight-year-old granddaughter Olivia.
“I think he’s absolutely bonkers for even contemplating it so soon,” Jodie said. “But his determination is incredible. Come rain or shine, blood, sweat, and no doubt tears, we’ll be walking that 5K with him to raise funds for a fantastic charity.”
The walk represents much more than a fundraiser. For Michael and his family, it marks a meaningful step forward after an incredibly difficult year.
Supporting the Throat Cancer Foundation
All money raised will go to the Throat Cancer Foundation, a UK charity that helps people affected by throat cancers through practical support, education, and research.
Gordon Dow, Trustee at the Throat Cancer Foundation, said:
“Michael’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. His strength and refusal to give up, even in the face of such adversity, inspires us all.
Seeing him take on this challenge alongside his daughter and granddaughter is a powerful reminder of what resilience, love, and hope really look like. We’re incredibly proud to stand behind Michael and his family.”
How to donate
Michael’s fundraiser is live at JustGiving, where supporters can make a donation to help him reach his goal.
