Fulford resident to win cash for recycling

A resident in Fulford stands to win £120 this month – just for being a good recycler.

The normal £60 prize for the doorstep recycling challenge was not won in December, which means a lucky Fulford resident is in with a chance of bagging double the money.

Stafford Borough Council will be visiting a house in the village selected at random this month as part of the initiative.  If the householder’s green refuse bin contains nothing recyclable, they will receive £120. If they don’t succeed, the team will visit other properties in the street.

The Council went to Haughton near Stafford last month but despite visiting several properties they failed to find anyone able to show their refuse bin was recycling free.

I hope people in Fulford will not look this gift horse in the mouth. We have had great support from our communities since this initiative began. It gives us a chance to reward those who make the effort to recycle all they can while also spreading the message to others that a lot of what they throw away in their green refuse bins can be recycled.

“First and foremost it is good for the environment, but there is also a financial benefit as the council gets money for the amount we recycle and this cash is pumped back into the service, meaning less money is needed to run it – so ultimately, recycling is helping to keep council tax down.” [/box]

It is part of a campaign to boost household recycling – which the local authority say will help keep council tax down. An increase of just 1% on recycling is worth nearly £14,000 to the authority.
