It’s all happening for youngsters in Staffordshire’s libraries this summer with Pokemon Go and the popular Summer Reading Challenge on offer!

It’s no secret that Pokemon characters are now lurking amongst the bookshelves in many of the county’s libraries.
With free Wi-Fi available, gamers are encouraged to drop in to their local library, some of which are designated as Pokestops, and Pokegyms, where Pokemon can be caught and trained.
Several libraries are hosting special events for youngsters, such as conducting Pokemon Go tours and scheduling Pokemon lures.

Whilst the young gamers are on the hunt for Pokemon, the county’s libraries will be encouraging them to sign up for The Big Friendly Read, this year’s Roald Dahl-themed Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to read at least six books during their long school break.

Almost 4,000 children, aged four to eleven, have signed up for the free scheme in its first two weeks, enjoying lots of fun activities designed to inspire and entertain young readers.
[box type=”shadow” align=”aligncenter” ]Staffordshire‘s Library Leader, County Councillor Gill Heath said: “Libraries have always offered a safe, welcoming environment for families, so where better to let younger children play Pokémon Go, and at the same time encourage them to sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge.”
“I’m delighted that so many youngsters have signed up so far and that 100 eager beavers have already read their six books and completed.”
“Almost 60% of children surveyed after last year’s challenge believed they were better readers by the end of the holidays.” [/box]
Last year over 13,000 children across the county signed up for the scheme with almost eight and a half thousand completing.
The Summer Reading Challenge launched in libraries across Staffordshire on Saturday 16th July. Children can sign up for the FREE challenge at their local library and will receive a free starter pack.
The Summer Reading Challenge, delivered by Staffordshire Libraries, is produced by The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to inspire people to read more, supported by children’s publishers.
