Organisations from Stone are being encouraged to show off their green credentials by entering an annual competition.
The popular ‘Green Awards’ run by Stafford Borough Council are a chance for organisations across the borough to showcase what they do to stay eco-friendly.
The event aims to reward the efforts of local businesses, schools and other community groups that help the environment by contributing to a more sustainable borough.
The initiative was launched in 1996 and has seen organisations from factories to churches take part. The competition is open to all groups operating within the borough and has played a key role in the council’s agenda on issues surrounding carbon reduction and sustainable development.
Councillor Frank Finlay, cabinet member for environment and health, said: “These awards reward forward-thinking businesses and other agencies for their initiatives. Many of the projects are not just about being environmentally friendly they also save money, something that every smart business or organisation will want to be involved in especially in the difficult financial climate.”
For the awards the borough council also works in partnership with other eco friendly local businesses and organisations. Last year Stafford and Rural Homes took home the Community and Wellbeing prize for turning a three bedroom derelict house into a new eco home. And Milwich Pre-School won the Youth and Education award for making a new allotment site out of unused land.
And this year there will be a new award for Best Innovative Transport.
The closing date to enter the competition is 19th July 2013, with an awards ceremony being held in October.
As well as the overall prizes there are a number of special awards up for grabs and for more information or to download an application form go to www.staffordbc.gov.uk/green-awards.
