Gummy’s back with a splash as Dennis Abbott releases his second children’s book

Dennis Abbot - Gummy

After making his debut as a children’s author in 2023, Dennis Abbott has returned with another helping of underwater adventures in his new book Gummy’s Adventures in Fatro.

From fishbowl to fantastical

Gummy the Goldfish, who first swam into the hearts of young readers two years ago, is back with even more stories to tell.

This time, he leaves the comfort of his bowl behind and ventures into the magical underwater world of Fatro. Along the way, he meets:

  • Sebby the Skate
  • Kermit the Hermit Crab
  • Algy and Angie the Angel Fish
  • …plus a surprise character that older readers might just recognise.

The six new stories are packed with fun, friendship and a touch of the unexpected. Fans of the first book will also be pleased to see some familiar faces from Gummy’s earlier adventures.

A story that began with family

The Gummy tales began during the quiet days of lockdown in 2020. While reading to his grandchildren over Zoom, Dennis was asked by his eldest grandson Jacob,

“Grandad, can you tell us a story out of your head?”

From that moment, Gummy was born. Dennis’s other grandchildren, Eddie and Rosie, helped shape the story too by suggesting names for Gummy’s friends.

Now 76, Dennis is a retired telecoms engineer who has always found time to give back. He’s known in the town for his years of volunteering, from being a Beaver Scout Leader and a Lay Minister to supporting children at the local first school.

His first book, The Adventures of Gummy the Goldfish, was released in 2023 with the support of Austin Macauley. Local pupils at St Michael’s First School were among the first to hear Gummy’s early tales during the lockdown period, and Dennis credits his wife Nichola for encouraging him to turn those early ideas into something more.

More than just a fish tale

Although playful in tone, Dennis includes gentle messages in each of his stories, hoping to spark meaningful conversations with young readers.

“I try to include a little message in my stories to show children that everyone is different and shouldn’t be judged by how they look.”

With a grin, he adds,

“It started with a fish; never thought it would come to this!”
