Stone Dominoes LFC made it into the third round of the FA Women’s Cup at the weekend after a penalty shoot-out victory at Wyrley Ladies FC, with goalkeeper Charlotte Perry the hero of the hour with three shoot-out saves.
The game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes, and again after extra time, forcing the shoot-out, although Stone almost lost at the end of 90 minutes, when a last-minute penalty was missed by Wyrley in a dramatic end to normal time.
After no goals in extra time, Stone went on to win the penalty shoot-out 3-2, with keeper Perry putting in an amazing performance, with a string of crucial saves throughout the game, not to mention her shoot-out heroics.
Stone had taken the lead just before half-time when a Kerry McCourt corner fell to the feet of Jules Kendrick, who calmly had time to control and find the back of the net. In the second half, a lack of communication in defence led to Wyrley’s equaliser, but another corner led to Stone edging in front again, with Hannah Perry heading home. With five minutes to go, Wyrley made it 2-2 and, with just seconds left on the clock, were awarded a penalty. If they’d netted it, Stone would have been dumped out.
Both teams tired in extra time and no other goals were forthcoming, leading to the penalty shoot-out and a great victory for Stone.
The third round will be played on Sunday 11th October. Stone have been drawn at home against Kettering, 2pm kick-off at Wellbeing Park in Yarnfield.
