High Street empty shop update

The empty shop in Stone High Street

Despite work currently going on at the former Joule’s wine shop on the High Street, the site may not be getting a new occupier just yet.

It has emerged that the current leaseholder of the building is Punch Taverns, whose contract with the unknown owner of the building comes to an end in September. Thanks to Rob Kenney for this information.

The current work to repair the roof and spruce up the interior is to fulfill contractual obligations to return the building in a fit state at the end of the contract.

A Punch Taverns spokeswoman said: “We can’t reveal the owner of the building but we have to make sure that it is in a fit state of repair when our lease comes to an end in September.”

The shop was used for many years by Victoria Wine and then as a Sue Ryder charity shop but has been empty for years. Hopefully, a new occupier will be easier to find for the owner when all the repairs have been done.

  • As I’ve been led to believe, the shop has been empty for years due to the damaged roof. People have been interested in it over the years, but it would have been to costly for them to repair.

The high street is there for us all to use, but if we neglect it and don’t take advantage of what’s on our doorstep then the future of it may be very daunting.

  •  The shop is too big and too expensive for Stone. It’s been empty for years and unless a big chain came in for it, it will be empty for a few more years. The High Street is finished I’m afraid!
