Host families are needed in Stone this summer for children from Belarus who will be spending time in the town to recover from cancers caused by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Margie Haslop from the Chernobyl Children’s Project in Stone has appealed for people to come forward if they can help.
Margie Haslop, organiser of the Chernobyl Children’s Project in Stone, said: “What we are looking for are host families who would take two Belarusian children for two weeks in the summer. The slots are 20th July to 3rd August and then 3rd August to 17th August. We need two families for girls in the first fortnight and three families for boys, one for the first fortnight slot and two for the second fortnight slots.
“During the time the children are with us there is a full entertainments programme and we have the 24/7 support of an interpreter and a doctor. At least one adult host needs to be available during the day time, ie not full time working. We do have some friends/buddies who can support hosts. The children are all in remission from their cancers and we have never needed the doctor’s support in any cancer-related issue.
“The children are “well” when they come to us. They come here because a month away from the radiation which is particularly high in the summer in Belarus can enhance their very compromised immune systems for up to two years. Hosting is great fun. The children are refreshing company and through their delight we realise how much in our life styles we take for granted. I do hope you will be able to help.”

You may not be able to host the children but there are other ways that you could help too – fundraising, donating toys and games, perhaps you can provide some entertainment for the children while they’re in Stone. Contact Margie if you can help.
