Hoverboard battery believed to have caused Stone fire

Fire crews were called to The Fillybrooks in Stone in the early hours of Tuesday 17 March after a motorhome caught fire.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were sent to the scene at around 2.20am. When they arrived, they found the motorhome and two sheds alight.

The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.

The service said the blaze is believed to have started after a lithium-ion battery in a toy hoverboard, which was next to the vehicle, got wet.

Watch manager Jack Reinholds, the incident commander, said,

“A wet lithium-ion battery is a safety hazard, as water can cause internal short-circuiting, rapid overheating, toxic gas release and fire. Please bare this in mind when storing devices with these batteries.

“Thankfully, on this occasion, we were able to act quickly and prevent any further spread of the fire.”
