How to stay well and look after your neighbours during this cold weather

With snow, ice and freezing forecast there are some simple things that you can do to look after yourself, family and neighbours.

Please be mindful to check on older family members, friends and neighbours to ensure that they are safe and well, particularly if they have any health conditions.

Following simple steps like keeping homes at 18C, staying active, and eating at least one hot meal a day can all help to cope at this time of year.

Spells of cold weather can put older people, those with underlying health conditions and young children, at risk from a range of conditions because it forces their bodies to work much harder than usual.

Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for health, care and wellbeing Alan White said:

“With freezing temperatures forecast over next few days we’re encouraging people to ensure they look after themselves and family, friends and neighbours. Simple steps like keeping your house warm and ensuring you or your family have any medication they need can help.

“People who have an older relative or neighbour may want to check on them during the cold period as they may not want to leave their homes. Preventing ill health which can be worsened by cold weather is the key.”
