In pictures: Christmas lights switch-on

If you were brave enough to go to the Christmas lights switch-on in Stone town centre on Thursday night then you’re probably still drying out! A downpour, high winds and a bitterly cold night understandably saw numbers well down on previous years.

Hundreds of people still ventured into town, however, to see Stone’s London 2012 Olympian and Stoke singer Ollie Marland turn on the lights with mayor and mayoress Mike and Susan Shaw. Local band Phoenix, Stone singer-songwriter Ben Owen, the Stone Combined Schools Choir and Beggaz Belief performed and the event was compered by Stafford Radio. You can see more of their photos on their Facebook page HERE.

What a wet switch on event!! but a massive thanks to all who came and supported it,a big thanks to the parents who brought children to sing in the school combined choir. Heres hoping next year it will be dry! A massive thanks to Stone in Bloom for providing such lovely Christmas trees over the businesses who would purchase one. They are very nice trees and twinkly lights I think they really add to our Towns lights. Its sad that not all the businesses would buy a tree at £25 installed I think they represent great value. Note people of Stone the big businesses and banks that wouldn’t have one. Happy to take Stones money but not put a little bit back, how sad. Finally I am sorry that the tree at Walton and the tree at the Top of our High street are not as good as they should be, I am endeavouring to sort this out. I will be trying to pursued my committee to devote budget for purchasing new modern harness lights and re wrapping both tree’s as a matter of importance for our town centre Christmas lights 2013. Unfortunately unlike Stafford Borough, Stone’s Christmas lights have to be produced on a very tight budget, so I will be looking closely at what represents good value for money for Stones Christmas lights for years to come. A very happy Christmas and New Year to the People of Stone.

Great big thanks to the volunteers behind the scenes who made the town look so beautiful for the night. Stone in Bloom who put up all the Christmas trees . Thanks to the generosity of those businesses who bought the trees entering into the Christmas spirit. Once again thanks to them we have a twinkling town.
