In pictures: Stone Scouts’ Big Adventure

A celebration of Scouting in Stone was held at Crown Meadow in September, with dozens of activities to try, music and a barbecue.

These great pictures from Andy Evans, the leader of 5th Stone (St Michael’s) Scout group, show what a good time was had by all at The Big Adventure event!

Organiser Gill Knight writes: The first ever Scouting Big Adventure was on Saturday 10th September around the amphitheatre.

There were marquees for all sections of the Scout movement – Beavers aged six to eight; Cubs aged eight  to 10½; Scouts 10½ – 14; and the Explorer section all ‘hiked’ around town, returning to set up camps during the day.

Each section ran pack meetings for 90 minutes as they would on any meeting night. We were very lucky to have groups from all over Stone District come along. Each pack meeting is run differently and we as Scouts were interested to learn from each group and share our knowledge and friendship; and the children who are not within Scouting yet were excited about the activities they took part in on the day.

The Scout and Guide band, which recently has had its leadership taken over by young ex-band members, played music for the attendees throughout the day and interacted with all the young children on the field so that they could play the instruments available within the band. They are a mixture of all Scout and Guide groups within Stone District and meet on a Saturday morning at Westbridge Park for their practice sessions.

A last-minute addition to the day was the mobile climbing wall, so we were able to offer all the children and adults a FREE climbing session on the day.

We were so lucky with the weather as the sun shone through out the day. It was lovely to see new faces at the event – although a few more would have been nice.

We hope we were able to show you all the vast amount of voluntary work within Scouting that occurs in Stone District, and the immense pleasure that the children gain from being part of this worldwide youth group.

You can see lots more pictures from The Big Adventure at Andy’s Flickr site.

  • Thanks Jamie
I must stress that i was a very small cog in the organisation team from all over the district.
The logistics of erecting and striking the marquees was immense. The event closed at 4.00pm and within 50 minutes 5 marquees were down and packed ready for transportation just as the heavens opened.
Terrific team work form the Gang
