Homeowners in Stone on low incomes have the opportunity of interest-free loans from the borough council to do up their properties.
People across Stafford Borough on benefits such as Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance or Guaranteed Pension Credit can apply for up to £5,000 to repair leaking roofs, replace windows and doors or improve heating. The essential work would be carried out by the Council’s Home Improvement partner – Orbit Care and Repair. The loans would be paid back over an agreed period or when the owner sold their property.
The money is targeted at borough residents who would otherwise find it difficult to get loans from traditional high street lenders.
Councillor Patrick Farrington, cabinet member for community, said the scheme would allow people to get essential work done to their home without worrying about running up huge debts. He said: “Health and wellbeing is one of our top priorities and the importance to health of having a decent home to live in cannot be underestimated. But some people are unable to meet the cost of repair works – often through no fault of their own – and this initiative is aimed at making sure they have the opportunity of a better quality of living.”
