Investigative road works to begin ahead of major Stone ring road scheme

Preparation work ahead of a major road maintenance scheme in Stone town centre is due to begin next week, with overnight closures and temporary daytime traffic management planned.

Roadworks

We recently reported on the traffic notice, after signs appeared across the town. Now, Staffordshire County Council has confirmed that the initial phase of works will focus on investigation and preparation, including drainage checks, CCTV surveys and road surface investigations. These will help shape the design of a larger structural maintenance scheme planned for later this summer.

The investigative works will take place on key sections of the Stone town centre ring road, including Stafford Street, Crown Street, Newcastle Street, Christchurch Way and Radford Street.

Work is scheduled to start on Monday 9 February.

During the first week, overnight road closures will be in place each evening from Monday through to Friday 13 February. These closures will run overnight only.

In the second week, which coincides with the schools’ half-term, the approach will change. Instead of overnight closures, drivers can expect lane closures and temporary traffic signals operating during the daytime only.

The council says this phase of work is expected to take around a fortnight in total.

The investigative works are separate from the main maintenance scheme, which is planned to take place later in the year. That larger programme of resurfacing and structural repairs is currently scheduled to run from mid-June through to August and is expected to take around two weeks to complete. Full details of that phase, including traffic management arrangements, will be confirmed closer to the time.

Patrick Allen, Patrick Allen, cabinet support member for highways at Staffordshire County Council, said the early works were essential to ensure the main scheme can be delivered efficiently.

“A major road maintenance scheme is planned for the Stone ring road this summer which will bring huge improvements for motorists around a busy and thriving town.

“To ensure the design and preparation is thorough, these investigative works over the next fortnight are essential. Not only will they ensure we have a high-quality scheme, but also that it can be carried out as quickly as possible.

“This phase has been planned to coincide with the half-term break to minimise disruption, with the bulk of the main scheme taking place during the summer holidays.

“We understand that with any traffic management however, particularly on such a busy route, there will inevitably be some disruption for which we would like to apologise for in advance. We’re always grateful for people’s understanding wherever we’re carrying out improvements.”

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys through the town centre during the works and to follow signed diversions and temporary signals where in place.
