Janice’s 75 km mission for Stone’s older residents

Janice Curtis, a local volunteer with Age Concern Stone & District, is taking on an ultra-challenge this summer to raise funds for the charity that supports older people in the community.

On the weekend of 28th and 29th June 2025, Janice will be lacing up her boots and heading into the Peak District for a gruelling 75 km trek, and she won’t be doing it alone. Her two children, James and Sophie, will be right there beside her, supporting her through the hills, mud, and miles as they walk continuously from Saturday morning through to Sunday.

Supporting Stone’s older generation

Age Concern Stone & District has been part of the local community since 1991. The small, independent charity is based on Station Road in Stone and aims to empower older people to live fulfilling, independent lives.

Its services include:

  • A free and confidential information and advice line
  • A monthly Lunch Club and regular coffee mornings
  • A volunteer-run hospital transport scheme

All of this is made possible by a dedicated team of volunteers like Janice, who give their time to help others in the community.

“Some of you may know that I volunteer at Age Concern,” Janice shared. “It’s a small local charity, and it relies entirely on donations to keep going. I wanted to do something that would help raise awareness, and funds, for the work we do.”

A personal mission

The challenge will see Janice and her family walk day and night through the rugged terrain of the Peak District, testing both their physical and mental stamina. But the motivation is clear: every step helps support older residents in and around Stone.

If you’d like to support Janice and contribute to the charity’s vital work, donations can be made online via the charity’s website:

Alternatively, donations by cash or cheque can be dropped off at the charity’s office at 15 Station Road, Stone. The office is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Janice added, “Any amount you can give will be so appreciated. It all goes towards helping older people in our town stay connected and supported.”
