A local litter picker who quietly collects three bags of rubbish a week has been officially recognised for his efforts to keep Stone looking its best.
Jason Turner goes litter picking three times a week – and he had his high vis and grabber handy when he paid a special visit to Stone Town Council on Tuesday (April 1) to collect a certificate of appreciation.
Town Mayor Philip Leason, who presented the certificate and a merit plate, said:
“On behalf of Stone Town Council and the people of Stone, I would like to congratulate Jason Turner for his achievements as a hard working and dedicated volunteer litter picker, whose passion in the cause of keeping Stone clean and free of litter is admirable. The town of Stone is delighted to present this award, which is richly deserved, and serves as a reminder of the incredible contributions that volunteers make to our community.”
Councillor Jill Hood described Mr Turner as “the most incredible young man”. She added, “He is such an example of community spirit.
“He doesn’t ask for any recognition, he just goes out there and clears the town. It would be wonderful if all our young people were as consciencious as Jason – what a wonderful town we would have.”
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Turner said it felt “amazing” for his efforts to be recognised by the town council, and he also paid tribute to Gill Gannon, who got in touch with Councillor Hood to raise awareness of his community work.
When not keeping Stone tidy, he assists at Elverra Pony Rescue near Eccleshall twice a week through a placement organised by Futures2gether, which offers training opportunities and activities for adults with learning difficulties.
