Contraflow removal and abnormal load movement spell multiple A34 closures this weekend
The A34 is to be hit with a double dose of road closures this weekend as the Pets at Home road improvements and an abnormal load affect Stone residents and businesses.
When and where will the A34 be closed?
Saturday 1st July 2023
- A34 closed in both directions for approximately 2 hours between 08:00am – 12:00pm to allow for an abnormal load to pass through.
- A34 northbound – rolling temporary traffic halts will be in place as the abnormal load passes from Stafford and up through Stone and onward towards Newcastle Under Lyme
- A34 closed in both directions from 8:00pm on Saturday 1 July until 06:00am on Sunday 2 July
Sunday 2nd July 2023
- A34 closed in both directions from 8:00pm on Sunday 2 July until 06:00am on Monday 3 July
The roadwork closures will be in place between the A51 Aston roundabout and the A513 Redhill roundabout, with a signed diversion route in place via A51, A518, A513 & vice versa. During the closures, there will be no access beyond the new Pets At Home roundabout, therefore, access for frontagers will be from either the north or south dependant on which side of the new roundabout their property is located. Access for all frontagers, including The Greyhound PH will be controlled by traffic management operatives at the road closure points.
Access to properties and businesses
During the overnight closures, access to properties within the limits of the closure will be available as follows:
- Redhill Business Park – Access will be available from A34 northbound only via the Redhill roundabout. (No access from A34 southbound). All traffic exiting the business park will only be able to travel southbound.
- Partridge Walk & Bertelin Fields residential developments & Redhill Farm – Access will be available from A34 northbound only via Redhill roundabout. (No access from A34 southbound). All traffic exiting will only be able to travel southbound.
- Pets At Home Distribution Centre – Access will be available from A34 northbound only via the Redhill roundabout. (No access from A34 southbound). All traffic exiting Pets At Home will be directed by a traffic management operative – this will either be north or southbound dependant on works activities taking place.
- All other properties – Access to be gained from A34 southbound from A51 Aston roundabout. The road closure points will be manned by traffic management operatives for access to properties beyond these points. Through access to William Bagnall Drive or Redhill roundabout will not be available.
- Through traffic will not be available for any vehicles.
Why is the A34 being closed?
The Phase 2 A34 works are now nearing completion, and the contractor, McPhillips, is planning to commence the next phase of works from Monday, the 3rd of July 2023. This will see the end of the contraflow traffic management arrangement, and traffic will revert to using the north and southbound carriageways. The Phase 3 works will be carried out in the central reservation, which will require lane 2 to be closed in both directions.
Other Information
From Sunday, the 2nd of July, all traffic will be directed onto the northbound and southbound carriageways with a single lane open in each direction. Temporary restrictions, including a temporary 30mph speed limit and 3.65m width restriction, will remain in place. Additionally, Whitgreave Lane will remain with the current “left in/left out” restrictions using the A34 northbound carriageway only i.e., vehicles can only turn left into Whitgreave Lane from the northbound lane and must turn left onto the A34 northbound when exiting Whitgreave Lane. No movements between the A34 southbound lane and Whitgreave Lane will be possible.
