It’s National Butchers’ Week from 14th to 20th March, so we popped along to Lee Walker Family Butcher in Walton to find out why getting your meat from a quality local butcher beats the supermarket every time…

SPONSORED FEATURE
[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen the row of shops at Walton were built in 1968, Lee Walker’s dad Robert was one of the first to take on one of the units. And almost half a century on, the shop is still going strong, making it one of the longest-established businesses in the town.
After working with his dad and learning the trade, Lee took over the business in 2000 – but you’ll still see Robert (now in his 70s) behind the counter some days. And the Walker family is now in its third generation: Lee’s son Jack now also works there. It’s a real Stone family business.
They also nurture young talent. Sam Beverley started working for Lee as a Saturday job when he was at school. Ten years later, he’s a highly skilled butcher in his own right.

Unsurprisingly, Lee is passionate about the choice and quality served up by local butchers and is right behind National Butchers’ Week.
“National Butchers’ Week is a great opportunity for us to bang the drum for the local butcher,” he says, “and remind people of the quality products and service we deliver every day. Your local butcher has knowledge about meat that you won’t find anywhere else. We want to encourage people to tap into that knowledge, learn more about meat and, most importantly of all, learn how to cook it and enjoy it at home.”

Lee says there are five big reasons to sack the supermarket and use your local butcher when it comes to meat:
Quality
You’re going to struggle to find anything better in a supermarket.
Lee says: “All our meat is locally sourced, top quality stuff. Beef from Market Drayton, grass-fed lamb from Whittington, Staffordshire free-range chicken. And it’s sold at a fair price, too. I think some people are scared of using their local butcher because they assume it will be a lot more expensive than the supermarket. This really isn’t the case at all.”
Choice
A good butcher offers hundreds of different products. And as for those steaks? How thick would you like them cut?
Lee prides himself on good value. A range of hamper deals are always available, offering big savings, and – with summer on the way – look out for his BBQ packs! Not to mention his range of homemade sausages – everything from Welsh Dragon to pork and mustard and Hot & Spicy.

Service
A good butcher like Lee is an expert in their field. Butchers are full of advice, on how to wow at a dinner party to the right cooking times for the perfect roast.
Sustainability
Shopping at your local butcher not only shows support for your local economy, it also helps the farmers up and down the country and keeps those food miles nice and low.
Lee says: “This applies to all local, independent businesses, not just butchers, but by using a local business you are supporting lots of other local businesses and industries too, supporting jobs and the local economy. This is particularly important in the food and farming industry, where local produce and real sustainability is vital.”
Flexibility
Cooking for one? Or just fancy a single sausage? The butcher is your man – not only is it cheaper, but by just buying what you need, you cut down on any potential waste.
As well as all of the above, Lee Walker Family Butcher serves up hot food – sandwiches, baps, baguettes, breakfast boxes and more, all using their top quality meats.
And you may well have had one of Lee’s hog roasts recently – he catered for 73 events last year, from private parties to summer fetes and corporate events. Call Lee on 01785 812809 if you’d like to book one for your event this year.
Butchers remain the number one choice for range, service and convenience when it comes to buying your meat.
