The Liberal Democrats have selected their candidate for the Stone constituency for the General Election.
Martin Lewis has lived in Staffordshire most of his life and in the 1960s went to school in Stafford. He lived in Swynnerton in the 1990s before moving to Clayton in Newcastle-under- Lyme, on the edge of the Stone constituency, where he now lives. Martin was a civil servant for 37 years before retiring a few years ago.
The Lib Dems came second in Stone at the last election, gaining 22% of the vote. He thinks the Lib Dems were right to go into a coalition and says the party has tried hard to “keep their coalition partners on the straight and narrow for five years”. Martin says the party has been able to implement several key policies – like raising the Income Tax threshold for 25 million people, saving them £800 each and lifting three million people out of tax altogether.
Martin joins Labour’s Sam Hale and UKIP’s Andrew Illsley as the confirmed candidates for the Stone constituency so far. Although not official yet, sitting MP Sir Bill Cash is expected to defend his 13,292 majority from the 2010 election.
