Stone will mark a moving moment in history with music, remembrance and the lighting of a beacon on Thursday, 8th May
Stone Town Council invites the community to come together for a poignant evening of remembrance as the town joins the rest of the country in commemorating 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The free event will take place on Thursday, 8th May 2025, beginning at 8:30 pm at the War Memorial at the top of the High Street. The evening promises a reflective atmosphere with performances from the Florence Brass Band and the Stone Choral Society, followed by a short service, wreath laying and a shared moment of silence.
At 9:30 pm, a beacon will be lit, forming part of a nationwide tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. Beacons will be lit across the UK at the same time, symbolising peace and resilience.
Earlier in the day, the Stone Heritage Centre will host a special one-day exhibition, open from 11:00 am to 9:30 pm. The exhibition will explore Stone’s wartime history and share personal stories of those who contributed to the national effort. Entry is free and no booking is required.
A time to reflect together
VE Day marked the formal end of the war in Europe on the 8th May 1945. It was a day of celebration, but also one of remembrance for the millions who never came home. Stone’s commemorative event offers an opportunity to reflect on that balance of joy and sorrow, and to honour a generation who lived through extraordinary times.
Stone Town Council hopes the evening will bring people of all ages together to reflect and remember as a community.
