Local Clinical Psychologist and Christchurch Academy Parent Governor Dr Carly Pointon is set to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon on 6th April 2025, aiming to raise funds for The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa). This event marks a significant milestone in her personal journey and her commitment to supporting children affected by parental alcohol misuse.
A Personal Connection
Dr. Pointon’s relationship with Nacoa began during her teenage years when the charity provided her with essential support. Reflecting on her experiences, she shared, “Nacoa became a support to me when I was a teenager—that was a long time ago now!” The impact of her mother’s struggles with alcohol, leading to her passing in 2019, has been a driving force behind Carly’s dedication to the cause. In 2023, she and her husband, Brett, participated in a 21-mile walk for Nacoa, and now, she’s taking on the challenge of running a half marathon. More than 2.6 million children are estimated to be affected in the UK alone.
Overcoming Personal Challenges
The decision to try running again wasn’t made lightly. In 2016, Dr. Pointon suffered an ankle injury that left her believing she would never regain her fitness. This setback led to weight gain, especially given she has also suffered from endometriosis her whole adult life too. There were certainly times when she felt affected by not being able to exercise. However, since 2021, she has embarked on a transformative journey, shedding nearly five stone now and reclaiming her health. Despite some challenges, the upcoming half marathon serves as a renewed goal to maintain her progress and inspire others facing similar obstacles. Carly regularly trains others in trauma-informed practice and uses the power of facing your past traumas as a firm example of how to grow resilience in your present and future.
Community Support and Training

Training for the marathon has been a community effort. Trevor Oliver at Ambition Private Fitness Studio, located at Unit C, Whitebridge Industrial Estate in Stone, has been instrumental in Carly’s preparation. The studio, known for its supportive environment, offers specialized programs for individuals new to exercising or those seeking to achieve specific fitness goals. Their new “I Don’t Run Club” is tailored for beginners, providing a welcoming space for all fitness levels. Carly expressed her gratitude, stating, “Ambition has been a massive support and is currently training me for the marathon.”
Raising Awareness and Funds
Most importantly, Carly is passionate about raising awareness for Nacoa and the vital services they offer. The national charity, founded in 1990 and based in Bristol, provides information, advice, and support to everyone affected by a parent’s drinking. Their mission is rooted in the belief that every child deserves a happy childhood, free from the challenges associated with parental alcohol problems. Carly emphasized, “I want to tell as many people as I can about the fantastic work they do so that people can benefit from their support.” They have recently presented a letter to 10 Downing Street from 13-year-old Amelie Norfolk and Carly hopes to work on the All Party Parliamentary Group for COAs with George Freeman in the near future.
How to Support
Carly has set a fundraising target of £500. As of now, she has raised £325 through the generous contributions of 22 supporters. Donations can be made via her JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/carly-pointon-1731959453317?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL. Every contribution brings her closer to her goal and supports Nacoa’s mission to assist children in need.
On Saturday 8th March there will also be a Spring Charity Dog Walk starting at Purely Dogs, Unit 22c, Whitebridge Way, Stone, ST15 8LQ. Purely Dogs – The best ingredients for a happy and healthy dog. There will be dog demos and advice from Adam Dunn and DogsMindsMatter from 12:00, and then the Dog Walk will start at 14:00 (£3 donation per family welcomed). Families will have the chance to take part in a ‘spot the dog’ trail on the way around, and ‘human’ treat bags will be on sale on the day to raise funds for both Nacoa and Stone Community First Responder – of which Carly’s husband Brett volunteers for as a First Responder.

Looking Ahead
With the marathon date approaching, Carly remains focused and optimistic. She hopes her journey will inspire others to pursue their goals, regardless of the challenges they may face. “I can’t wait until the 6th of April! Every step brings me closer to the finish line, and knowing it’s for a cause that means so much to me keeps me going,” she shared.
The London Landmarks Half Marathon offers participants a unique opportunity to run through the heart of the city, passing iconic sites such as Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Tower of London. For Carly, this race is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a testament to resilience, community support, and the profound impact of charitable organizations like Nacoa.
