After a fulfilling career in the telecoms industry spanning 45 years and years of dedication to his local community, Stone’s very own Dennis Abbott is set to make his debut in the world of children’s literature.
Known for his roles as a Beaver Scout Leader, a Lay Minister in the town’s parish church, and a volunteer at his local first school, Dennis is now adding ‘author’ to his impressive list of contributions.
‘The Adventures of Gummy the Goldfish’, due to be released on the 23rd of June 2023, marks Dennis’s first venture into story writing. The book is a delightful underwater adventure featuring the charming Gummy the Goldfish and his band of aquatic friends. From their home in a fishbowl to the vast expanses of a lake, Gummy and his friends embark on a series of fun-filled escapades that promise to captivate young readers.
The inspiration for ‘The Adventures of Gummy the Goldfish’ comes from a special place close to Dennis’s heart: his own family. “For my grandchildren, who gave me some great ideas,” the foreword of the book reads. It was his grandson Jacob’s request for a “story out of your head” that led to the birth of Gummy the Goldfish. Dennis’s other grandchildren, Eddie and Rosie, also contributed by naming some of Gummy’s friends.
Dennis extends his gratitude to the team at Austin Macauley, who brought life and colour into his characters, as well as the children of St Michael’s CE (VC) First School in Stone, who were early listeners to his stories during lockdowns. His wife, Nichola, also receives a special mention for her unwavering support and encouragement throughout this new venture.
