(wibbly wobbly no expense spared back in time special effect!) If you’re as old as me, chances are your childhood Saturday mornings and post-school afternoons were spent glued to the box, watching the antics of Penelope Pitstop (careful how you say that!) and the rest of the Wacky Races mob.
Seems Hanna-Barbera have a lot to answer for, but it’s all for an extremely worthy cause. Hot on the heels of the Stone Festival soapbox derby, in August, Stone lads James Sutton, James Curtis and Ryan Leadbeater are undertaking a 3500km Rickshaw (aka Tuk Tuk) Race across India from Shillong to Cochin.
The race starts on 1st August and lasts for 3 weeks on some of the most treacherous roads in the world. The guys will battle monsoon rains and 40+ degree heat in a 7HP Tuk Tuk that’s guaranteed to break down almost every day.
So why are they doing this?
Well, it’s all in aid of an awesome charity called Cool Earth that helps indigenous populations protect their own rainforest. The intrepid trio are looking to raise £1000 which will help to save 16-17 acres of forest. You’ll be able to keep up with their adventures as they’ll be blogging throughout the race and updating their position so their progress can be tracked.
Fancy tackling it yourself, or would like to make a donation? Below are the websites of both The Adventurists, the company that organises the race, and the Cool Earth page for donations. It is the culmination of a year’s traveling for the two Jameses. The three friends are all Stone residents and would love the support of our generous townsfolk.
