North West Counties League Div 1 (South)
Saturday 27th April 2019
With Rylands crowned Champions and Wythenshawe Amateurs Runners Up, Stone Old Alleynians, presently in 5th, could finish anywhere between 3rd and 7th, depending on results on the final day of the season.. Following their last 2 results, a 5-0 home defeat to Champions Rylands and a late winner in a 2-1 victory against local rivals Stone Dominoes, thanks to goals from Jack Tomlinson and Will Byers, a win was essential against form team Cheadle Heath Nomads. As in the last 2 games they were without several players through various reasons, so only had 3 substitutes, comprising of injured duo Dave Ablewhite and Luke Askey and assistant manager Sam Hodgkinson.
On a wet and windy afternoon in Stockport, it only took the Old Boys 5 mins to take the lead. A powerful cross from Will Byers was fumbled by Aaron Tyrer, in the home goal and there was ace goal poacher Jack Tomlinson to snap up the loose ball to put them one up. There was a further blow for Cheadle after 19mins when defender, Ashley Crank, was dismissed for a scything tackle on Tomlinson. Ten minutes later Johnny Kapend’s season came to an end with a hamstring injury and he had to be replaced by Dave Ablewhite for the last hour. Going down to 10 men seemed to inspire the hosts, who equalized on 34mins following a mix up between Adam Alcock and Adam Pope resulting in Leon Grandison putting the ball into an unguarded net, from 40 yards. Their joy was short lived however as 2mins later Sam Wilson received a pass to chip the keeper from the edge of the area. On half-time the Old Boys increased their lead through Matt Thomas. After the home keeper had pushed out a couple of headers from Thomas, he finally put the ball in through his boot, with his third attempt.
Half Time:- Cheadle Heath Nomads 1 – 3 Stone Old Alleynians
Cheadle looked lively, with the wind at their backs at the start of the second half, although Adam Heath skimmed the crossbar with a 20 yarder. Cheadle though reduced the lead again to one, after 5mins, when Jack Warren spotting Alcock off his line and hit a wind assisted shot, the ball looped over Alcock and nestled in the angle of post and crossbar. On the hour Stone, restored their 2 goal advantage through Wilson, for his second, following a catastrophic mix-up in the Nomads defence, easily slotting home from 15 yards. Alcock made a great save after 80mins, as the hosts again tried to come back. However it was all over 6mins later. Byers picked up a through ball and broke clear to coolly slot home past Tyrer.
