Stone Old Alleynians eased into the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Vase, with a workman like performance against Lutterworth Athletic, from the United Counties League.
The first opportunity came for the home side after 6 mins. A mistake at the back sent them clear, but debutant goalkeeper Brandon McEleny saved well, blocking the shot with his feet before the ball was cleared. The play was fairly even for the first 15 mins & the Old Boys were unlucky not to take the lead. Ollie Davies got to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Matt Thomas, whose first time volley looked destined for the net, before it struck a defender, who knew little about it, on the line and ricochet for a corner. Five mins later a similar move gave the visitors the lead, this time Davies’ cross to the far post beat everyone and drifted into the net for one nil. Two mins later the Old Alleynians doubled their lead. Good work by Malaki Norford on the right, saw him leave a couple of defenders in his wake, before crossing to Jack Tomlinson, who headed home.
The Leicestershire side tried to get back into the game in the second half but the Alleynians defence gave them very few opportunities, to reduce the deficit and any danger was dealt with by the impressive McEleny. The Old Boys, with 6 teenagers in the squad seemed content to play out the second half and keep their 2 goal advantage. They nearly increased it further when an in swinging corner by Thomas on the left, eluded everyone, except the defender on the line, who headed clear. The Athletic got a free kick, in a dangerous position, just outside the penalty area, but McEleny was equal to the shot.
