Stone Old Alleynians lost their chance of reaching the first round proper in the FA Vase for the first time, with 2 incidents at the end of normal and extra time.

aerial-battleIt was the hosts threatening first with a Danny Heard shot, just over the crossbar, when well placed, but they took the lead after 10 mins with a cracker. Ollie Davies’s cross from the left was met with a first time volley from just inside the area by Matt Thomas and the ball rocketed into the top corner of the net. After that there were no chances at either end as the match developed into a midfield battle until the 35th min when Nick Sewell broke clear for Ashby. Coming in from the right he lobbed Brandon McEleny, in the Old Boys goal, but the ball went wide of the far post. The game to life in the remaining 10mins of the half with Thomas testing Luke Hemingway, after another good move, but his shot lacked power. Then a free kick, outside the area at the other end, was tipped round the post by McEleny.

Playing some good inter passing football Thomas’s shot was saved by the keeper and the same player’s cross just beat the outstretched foot of Ryan Fox. Davies set up by Paul Griffiths whipped in a shot from 30 yards just over the bar. Sam Wilson, coming up from the back, weaved his way past the several defenders, but again his final shot lacked the pace to trouble Hemingway. The Old Alleynians were left to rue these missed chances, when Ashby equalized 4 mins into injury time. An Old boys attack broke down on the halfway line and a swift move down the right, left the home defence exposed, the cross found substitute Ben Betteridge unmarked and he had little difficulty in finding the net. The final whistle went immediately after the Alleynians kicked off.
The hosts still had two excellent chances to seal the game in extra time A Davies cross beat Hemingway only to comeback off the crossbar and after scramble in the 6 yard area the ball was somehow cleared. Then with the last kick of the game, another Davies cross was met by Danny Heard a yard out, but in his lunge for the ball, he could only scoop the bobbling ball over the crossbar.
