Staffordshire FA Vase
Saturday 12th November 2016
Stone Dominoes were unable to contain the quality of a youthful Newcastle Town side as they bowed out of the Staffs FA Vase on Saturday afternoon with a heavy defeat.
Sam Bryant had opened the scoring on the half hour mark before a Shay Finney strike and another from Bryant had put the visitors in control at the break. Bryant completed his hat-trick in the second period and another 3 for Finney as well as an Ant Byles own goal piled on the agony for Dominoes; Ash Thompson and Chris Nellis did add late consolations for the hosts.
Dominoes welcomed back Ryan Parkes but were without Lewis Adams, Ash Cooper, Joss Myatt, Jack Steele, Endon Adams and Marcus Thorp. Finney came close to breaking the deadlock after 10 minutes when he slid in at the far post but could not stretch far enough to turn the ball home. Kay Beardmore prevented Bryant from opening the scoring minutes later when he denied the Newcastle forward after a clever chip to tip the ball over.
The home side almost took the lead when Jules Paterson latched on to a Thompson pass but his effort from a narrow angle was saved well by Owen Wyatt in the Newcastle goal. Bryant did put the away side in front minutes later when he showed quick feet on the edge of the area before sliding the ball past Beardmore into the bottom corner.
The lead was almost doubled immediately but Finney blazed his effort over the bar before he made amends instantly by taking on two defenders in the area and then firing past Beardmore. Dominoes were dealt a blow on the stroke of half time when a controversial free kick was brilliantly curled into the top corner by Bryant to put clear daylight between the sides.
Bryant completed his hat-trick early in the second half in what was almost a carbon copy of his second, this time curling his free kick into the bottom corner. Finney doubled his tally for the afternoon on the hour mark as he flicked home a corner with his head and he completed his treble 5 minutes later when he met a long ball to cleverly head over Beardmore into the net. Thompson pulled a goal back for the hosts midway through the half with a 30-yard strike, although Wyatt will feel he should probably have done better.
A mistake from Ant Byles allowed Finney to race through for his fourth with 10 minutes remaining before Paterson came close to pulling another back for his side as Wyatt recovered well to push the ball wide. Nellis tapped in for Stone’s second after a mistake from Wyatt but the victors had the final say when Byles could do nothing but turn a low ball across the area into his own net to complete the scoring.
Dominoes are in cup action again on Saturday when they welcome Maine Road Reserves to Wellbeing Park in the Northern Cup.
