May 2023 elections – Make sure you’re registered and have suitable photo ID

Stone 2023 ElectionsStone residents have only a short period of time to ensure they are on the electoral register and have the appropriate photo identification to vote in May’s local elections. 

Stone residents will be voting for 5 representatives, split across 2 wards, for Stafford Borough Council. As well as that there are 18 seats up for grabs, across 4 wards, in the Stone Town Council election.

The last day to register to be able to take part in these local elections is Monday the 17th of April. Stone residents can find out how to register by going to www.staffordbc.gov.uk/how-do-you-register-to-vote 

Electoral Returning Officer, Tim Clegg, who is the Chief Executive of the Borough Council, urged people to make sure they were registered to vote to take part in the elections. 

“Democracy is something you only miss when it is not there. Taking part in these elections gives you the opportunity to say who will be representing you and taking key decisions on how local services are provided across the borough.

He added “It only takes a few minutes to register online and it is very straightforward. There will be a polling station near to wherever you live or you can have a postal vote.” 

New Government rules mean residents wanting to vote will need to show identification at polling stations. A full list of accepted forms of ID can be found at Voter ID | Electoral Commission – and people who do not have any of the accepted identification have until Tuesday, the 25th of April to apply for a free ‘Voter Authority Certificate’ at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
