There are few things in life better than chips from your local chippy. Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy in the middle, steaming with salt and lashings of vinegar, they’re the ultimate comfort food. I’m getting hungry just typing this!
Despite new food and flavours for an increasingly sophisticated national palate, the popularity of the chip shows no sign of slipping. Almost 670,000 tonnes of British potatoes are made into fresh chips at chippies up and down the land every year, and they serve over 247 million portions of fish and chips.
National Chip Week, which runs from 16th to 22nd February, celebrates all that is great about the great British chip and Julie Churchman, who runs Stonefield Fish Bar with husband Stephen, is getting into the spirit. The chippy is suitably decorated, and there are some great offers over the week.
Julie and Stephen took over the chippy on Old Road in July 2012 after Julie left her job as a contract manager with Staffordshire County Council’s catering team. Not only did this role cover school meals but also catering for civic occasions, including the visit of the Queen to Staffordshire during her Jubilee tour of 2012. Julie worked with Hazel McLean at the county council – who was food development officer – for 20 years and when Julie took over Stonefield Fish Bar, she didn’t hesitate in getting Hazel on the team as quickly as possible. They’re a great pair, and obviously get on really well, and both have a passion for producing quality food using the best ingredients possible.
Julie explains more about what makes a great portion of chips in this short interview (excuse the buzzing at the start of the interview! Someone called my mobile as we were chatting)
There are special offers at Stonefield Fish Bar over National Chip Week, and they’re also launching a loyalty card during the week, which will run through the week and beyond. For each portion of chips bought, you get your card stamped. After 10 stamps, you get a free portion.
