The manager of Alleyne’s Sports Centre in Oulton Road has been appointed to the top role in a national sports body.
Duncan Carey has become regional president of the Institution of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM), the national body for people involved in operating and developing sport and recreation centres across the UK.
Duncan, 54, has been a member of the body since 1996 and was inaugurated in to the president position for the West Midlands this month marking his work in the sports arena over many years. He has been site manager at the Stafford Borough Council venue for around six years.
The institute encourages high standards of sport and recreation management and provides training for those who work in the business throughout the country. As well as working with Olympic and other community groups, the institute also helps to tackle issues such as obesity.
It was a double celebration for the former Blessed William Howard School pupil as he was also given the 2010 award for services to sports management in the West Midlands region.
Duncan said: “This role gives me a great chance to promote the institute at local level while promoting the work of the council throughout the West Midlands region – for example the next regional seminar is planned for Shugborough Hall in June.
“With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner it is a very exciting time for anyone involved in a professional sports capacity. It is a time when we can get more people interested in leisure pursuits which can help create a community spirit as well as tackle issues such as health problems.”
Stafford Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure, Mike Smith, said: “I am pleased Duncan has been given this honour for the work he has been doing over a number of years in the local sports community.”
