Nelson, Jervis and the Age of Sail
An illustrated talk by Admiral Sir Trevor Soar KCB, OBE, DL
Chairman of Chatham Historic Royal Dockyard
Tickets £15 / £10
Admiral John Jervis, the Earl of St Vincent, is Stone’s most famous son. He remains important, in part, due to his close association with England’s national hero, Horatio Nelson. In this illustrated talk Admiral Soar explores the many connections between Jervis and Nelson.
Jervis escaped from home to join the Navy aged 13. He served for 73 years rising from Midshipman to Admiral of the Fleet. Jervis became the Earl of St Vincent, but by his sailors he was known as ‘Old Jarvie’ or ‘Old Oak’. Refusing burial in St Paul’s Cathedral he sensibly chose Staffordshire. This special evening will support the Admiral John Jervis Appeal, his memory, and the urgent repair of his mausoleum.
Trevor Soar is Staffordshire’s only living admiral. Sir Trevor is a national expert on the Age of Sail, and is the Chairman of Chatham Historic Royal Dockyard.
