After being closed for almost four years, new plans have been submitted to Stafford Borough Council to bulldoze the Darlaston Inn and create a new 24hr petrol station and EV charging centre after abandoning drive-thru takeaway proposal.
The Darlaston Inn, situated inside a roundabout on the A34 north of Stone, closed suddenly in March 2018. Plans were initially lodged for a petrol station and drive-thru takeaway; however, those plans were refused due to the lack of safe pedestrian access to the site. Those previous plans have now been removed from the Stafford Borough Council planning portal and a new fuel and ev charging facility has been set out.
The new plan proposes the following:
- Demolition of the existing public house and children’s play centre
- 24hr Fuel Station for cars and HGV’s
- 10 EV charging Points
- 10 full time / 20 part-time jobs
- 4 Jet Wash bays
- 1 Car Wash
- 15 car parking and 4 cycle parking spaces
- Toilet
- Convenience store with an ancillary food counter
- Cash Machine
- Picnic Area
The EV charging looks like a great addition to the area but looking at the plan proposal the entry and exit look clumsy having to crossover in a sort of figure-of-eight, even more difficult to negotiate looking at the HGV including in the plan illustration.
Interestingly, the plans come on the back of plans to redevelop the Shell garage at Walton which would see them remove their jet wash and car wash facilities and installation of EV charging.
The site is still owned by the brewery Greene King and the application is put forward in conjunction with Euro Garages Group who operate a number of facilities in the area.
The consultation on the plan ends on 13th January 2022 and you can view the plans in their full details and provide your feedback, both for and against, using the Stafford Borough Planning Portal.

Just a point to note. There are two objections on the planning application. Two. If you don’t want this to happen then object. It’s easy to do. Follow the link. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
